As temperatures rise and families head to the pool, lake, or river, water safety is more important than ever. Whether you’re boating, swimming, or just relaxing near the water, the Accident Recovery Team encourages you to make safety your top priority.
This summer, the Accident Recovery Team is promoting water safety with our Summer of Safety Giveaway! Each week, we’ll be giving away $500 to a lucky winner to encourage safe travel, outdoor fun, and protection for your loved ones. Enter now and take the first step toward a safer season.
Swimmer and Water Safety
When swimming in a lake or pool, always stay in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. Swim with a buddy, and never allow children—or even adults—to swim alone. Drowning can happen in seconds, so it’s crucial to provide constant, undistracted supervision whenever kids are in the water. Even if a lifeguard is present or the child is a strong swimmer, adults should remain vigilant.
Assigning a “water watcher” within your group can help ensure someone is always paying attention. Avoid distractions like phones and make sure proper water safety equipment is on hand. Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Remember—floaties, water wings, and inflatable toys are not substitutes for supervision or life-saving devices. Also, be prepared by packing a first aid kit, a charged cell phone, and reaching/throwing equipment in case of emergency.
Boat Safety
Before setting out on the water, check that your boat is in good working order. Bring water safety essentials like sunscreen, drinking water, and a first aid kit—and don’t forget the life jackets. Everyone on board should wear one, no matter how well they can swim. Life jackets are not just recommended—they save lives.
Summer boating often means crowded lakes and waterways, which unfortunately increases the risk of collisions. Boat accidents in Kansas can result in serious injuries. If you’re ever involved in one, prioritize medical care, document the situation, and gather as much information as possible about the accident.
