As part of our ongoing commitment to community well-being, the Accident Recovery Team is excited to bring back our Summer of Safety Giveaway! Each week, we’ll be giving away $500 to a lucky winner. Whether you’re hitting the road on your bike or just enjoying the sunshine, we want to help you have fun and stay protected. Enter now and take the first step toward a safer season.
With that in mind, as the temperatures rise and outdoor activity ramps up, we want to make sure you’re prepared before hopping on your bike. Here are updated tips and reminders to keep you safe and aware every time you ride.
Prep Your Bike Before You Ride
Before heading out, take a few minutes to do a safety check on your bike. Doing a quick maintenance check can prevent a minor issue from becoming a dangerous situation on the road.
Tires
Make sure your tires are properly inflated and inspect them for cracks or worn tread. Check the sidewall for the recommended PSI.
Brakes
Test both front and rear brakes to ensure they engage smoothly.
Chain & Gears
Clean and lubricate your chain. Run through all the gears to ensure the transitions are smooth and your drivetrain is functioning well.
Fit Check
Adjust your seat height and handlebars for a comfortable and controlled ride. This is especially important for kids—last year’s bike may no longer fit.
Know and Follow the Rules of the Road
When you’re riding your bike on the street, you’re considered a vehicle in the eyes of the law. Predictability is key. The more drivers can anticipate your movements, the safer everyone on the road will be. That means you need to:
- Obey all traffic signs and signals
- Ride in the same direction as traffic
- Use bike lanes whenever possible—doing so reduces your chance of injury by more than 50%
- Use hand signals clearly and at least 100 feet before making a turn
Dress for Safety
Wearing the right gear is just as important as riding with care. Even during daylight hours, visibility is essential for your protection—and in the event of a crash, it can also help determine liability. Wear bright and reflective clothing to help you stand out to drivers. Plus, a properly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85%. Also, add flashing lights and reflectors on your bike and gear for added visibility
Stay Alert While Riding
Once you’re on your bike, keep your senses sharp. Safe riding starts with being aware of everything happening around you. That means:
- Watching for road hazards like potholes or metal grates
- Scanning for vehicles, pedestrians, and unexpected obstacles
- Checking the weather and planning your route to avoid sun glare or poor visibility
- Avoiding distractions—don’t wear headphones or use your phone while biking
If You’re Involved in a Bicycle Accident
Accidents can happen even when you’ve taken every precaution. If you’re in a crash, even if you feel okay, seek medical attention immediately. Internal injuries like brain trauma may not be visible but can be life-threatening. After getting medical care, contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. Preserving evidence, gathering witness statements, and filing your claim quickly can make a big difference in the outcome of your case.
