Drive Smart this Back-to-School Season

The school year is in full swing, so it’s important to drive smart as more congestion appears on the roads. Drivers need to slow down and pay more attention, especially before and after school. Accident Recovery Team has come together to create a few tips for drivers as we all head back to school.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up

Between school buses, kids on bikes and harried parents, school pick-up and drop-offs can be chaotic. Schools often have specific drop-off and pick-up procedures so as a parent, it’s imperative to know them. Abiding by the school’s procedures allows parents to drive smart and helps reduce frustration during times of natural road congestion. When dropping off or picking up, please don’t double park. As tempting as it is, it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles, creating a safety concern. And if you can help it, don’t load or unload children across the street from the school. Also, if you live close to other families with students, carpooling reduces the number of vehicles at the school. Even if you don’t have school-aged children, it’s vital to understand what’s expected of drivers in a school zone. Drive smart to ensure childrens’ safety and keep you from collecting a hefty fine.

Sharing the Road with Young Pedestrians & Bicyclists

With so many children on the streets before and after school, it’s important to drive smart all year long. When near a school zone. don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. This forces young pedestrians and bicyclists to go around you and could put them in the path of moving traffic. Anytime flashers are blinking in a school zone, stop and yield to anyone crossing the crosswalk or intersection. This includes always stopping for school patrol officers or crossing guards holding up a stop sign. Don’t honk or rev your engine to scare students, and never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians and bicyclists. Even outside regular school hours, drive smart by looking out for children in school zones and near playgrounds and parks.
